COSTA DEL SOL
Spain's most famous coastline, with the best climate in Europe, conjures up images of sunshine and beaches, golf, relaxation and holidays. Except that now many British people have realised that there's no need to limit their enjoyment of the Costa del Sol to a fortnight a year and instead have made a permanent home there.
Marbella's motto is "A Way of Life" and, certainly, this luxurious resort town seems to have it all and is, once again, rising to the fore as a favourite location with the rich and famous, as well as more ordinary folk who are willing to pay just a little bit extra for southern Spain's answer to St Tropez
45 years ago Marbella was an agricultural town, with a mining industry and 10,000 inhabitants. Today there are more than 100,000 inhabitants on the electoral roll, quite apart from the floating population. The town has become one of the largest tourist centres in the world and among its attractions, including 26 kms of clean beaches and beautiful mountain scenery (the Sierra Blanca), are a large network of high quality hotels, a fishing port and three marinas; amongst them the famous Puerto Banus, eleven golf courses (including a floodlit one), luxury residential complexes, and a sizeable catering and commercial industry dispersed along the streets and squares of the town, which has turned the ancient walled city, now the old quarter, into an important centre.
PROPERTY PRICES
Property prices have risen sharply in the Costa del Sol over the past few years and the average house price is now €450,000. Frenetic increases came about as a result of the speculator bubble, which saw its peak in April 2003. With so many investors buying multiple properties off-plan at once, then selling before the building had even reached completion, a sense of ‘buy now or miss out’ swamped the market.
